Talent on Route

On Friday 19th August 2005, SpRoUt launched its fourth foray into site-specific art adventures. A 1951 London Transport 'Green line' Coach transported passengers on a performative journey, a 'time-machine' that paused en route between Vauxhall and Walworth for performance stops. The journey culminated with further interventions and live art, music, and a local 'talent show' at The Mason's Arms on East Street market.

A critical engagement with non-traditional art contexts, Talent on Route investigated cultural nostalgia, migration, vernacular folklore and working class leisure pursuits.

The Mason's Arms on East Street market is a pub with strong links to the local Trade Association and was the hub of leisure activities such as 'beanos' and talent shows in post-war 1950's London. Talent on Route took its inspiration from this heritage. The subject holds specific relevance to contemporary performance practice - during the 50's the Mason's 'talent show' was a melting pot of entertainers that came from all over London - drag-acts, escapologists, strongmen, 'quacks', circus performers, rat and ferret fighters, 'tub-thumpers', singers and musicians.
